How I teach

Find your voice. Build your confidence.

Whether you're an experienced singer looking to take things further, returning to singing after some time away, or simply want to feel more confident in your voice, I'm here to help you understand how your voice works, and how to get the best from it.

Together, we'll discover your strengths, work on the things that are holding you back, and build a solid foundation for a voice that feels stronger, freer and more reliable.

There's no one-size-fits-all voice. We'll find what works for you.

We'll find how you learn best, and I'll give you the tools to keep improving long after the lesson ends. I don't follow a single method or school of singing. I draw on different approaches, because no one system works for every voice, and my job is to find what actually moves yours forward, then explain why, so it makes sense to you.

I started singing at 17 without a naturally gifted voice, and spent years going round in circles before I found real progress. That's exactly why I teach the way I do: clearly, patiently, and without pretending there's a magic trick.

"Easy to understand, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Coleman adjusts to what you need. The out of lesson support is great too. Recommended!"

The research

Can anyone learn to sing? Almost certainly, yes.

The short answer is yes. True tone deafness is rare, adults who practise improve measurably within weeks, and the benefits of singing reach well beyond the song itself. Here's what the studies say.

1.5%

of people have true tone deafness (congenital amusia). The other 98.5% have the ability to learn.

Peretz & Vuvan, 2017, University of Montreal
10 weeks

was enough for adult non-musicians to improve their pitch accuracy significantly, and to rate their own singing higher.

Paney & Tharp, 2021, Psychology of Music
Faster

social bonding: singing together brought new groups closer more quickly than other shared activities.

Who I teach

Singing lessons for adults, wherever you're starting from.

Complete beginners

You've never had a lesson and aren't sure what your voice can do yet. That's the best place to start.

Returning singers

You used to sing and stopped. We rebuild your confidence and technique together.

Improving singers

You sing already and want more range, control and consistency.

Actors and performers

Preparing for auditions, roles and shows, with someone who works in the industry.

Free practice app

Not ready to book yet? Warm up with me first.

Coleratura is the free warm-up app I built for my pupils. Real piano, chords and a gentle beat, set to your voice type. It opens in your browser, so there's nothing to download.

  • Five full warm-ups of about 15 minutes, from gentle to full range
  • 27 scale exercises you can set to your own notes
  • Free for good. No ads, no card, just your email

It's a practice tool, not a teacher. The app plays the notes. In a lesson, I listen.

Your first lesson

What happens in your first singing lesson.

  1. We talk

What you'd love to sing, where you sing now, and what you want from lessons. No pressure, no audition.

  2. I listen

I find your comfortable range, check your pitch matching and breath, and work out what's holding you back.

  3. We work

We start on the first things your voice needs, so you can feel the difference while you're still in the room.

  4. We plan

You leave knowing what to practise before next time, and where we're heading over the coming weeks.

Nervous? Most people are. One Harvard study found that saying "I am excited" before performing led to better performances than trying to calm down (Brooks, 2014). Nerves and excitement feel the same in your body. Call it excitement.

About me

Coaching backed by the stage, not just the studio.

I've been performing professionally for over 20 years, from supporting Kelly Clarkson in Miami with The Choir of Man to touring with Danny Elfman and Tim Burton. I've sung Paul McCartney's classical music at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral, performed for Stephen Sondheim and with Barry Manilow at the Olivier Awards, recorded film scores with Columbia Records in the US, and worked with Ed Sheeran.

I trained in musical theatre at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, where I'm now an examiner, and I was assistant head public speaking coach with TED Talks UK for two years. The confidence singing brings is about more than just singing songs.

Why adults take singing lessons

It's about more than the song.

Most of the adults I teach come for the singing. What surprises them is everything else that comes with it.

Less stress

In a University of Leicester study, 96% of people who joined a workplace choir said they felt less stressed, and 86% felt less lonely.

University of Leicester, 2019
Your voice at work

Listeners judged people as more competent and thoughtful when they heard them speak, rather than read the same words. How you use your voice matters.

Schroeder & Epley, 2015, University of Chicago
Confidence

Learning a song properly and singing it in front of someone builds real evidence that you can handle being heard. That feeling tends to follow you into meetings, toasts and presentations.

Singing lessons are singing lessons first. But the breath, posture and nerve you build in the studio are the same ones you use every time you speak up, which is why so many of my students say lessons changed more than their singing.

Online lessons

Online singing lessons, wherever you are.

Prefer to learn from home, or based outside London? Online lessons work just as well as in-person coaching for building technique, confidence and range. Many of my students train with me entirely online, fitting lessons around work, travel or family life. All you need is a quiet space and a decent internet connection.

Not sure which format is right for you? Have a look at singing lessons in London for more on how in-person and online lessons compare.

The studio

Studio space in Soho.

I teach in person from a professional studio in Soho, right in the heart of London. It's easy to reach from across the city, and a relaxed, private place for one-to-one coaching.

Oxford Circus station, on the Central, Victoria and Bakerloo lines, is a few minutes' walk away, so it's easy to fit a lesson in before or after work.

Before your first lesson

A quick checklist.

You don't need to prepare anything to book. But if you'd like to get the most from your first session, these help.

  • Pick one song you'd love to sing, and one you're quietly dreading.
  • Bring a bottle of water, and arrive five minutes early if you're coming to the studio.
  • For an online lesson, find a quiet room and set your device (laptop if possible) with camera and sound working.
  • Think about where you'd like your voice to be in six months.
  • Try a warm-up on Coleratura, my free practice app, so you arrive already warmed up.
  • Don't practise to impress me. We start from exactly where you are.

Questions

What people ask before their first lesson.

How much are your singing lessons?

Weekly one-to-one lessons are £350 a month, in the studio or online. The Singing Intensive, for faster progress, is £800 a month for 12 weeks.

How long is a singing lesson?

Lessons are an hour, one to one, in the studio or online.

Do you teach beginners?

Yes. I teach adults, actors, performers and singers of all levels, from people who've never had a lesson to working professionals.

Am I too old to start singing lessons?

No. Most of the adults I coach start in their thirties, forties or fifties. I started late myself, at 17, without a natural voice.

What if I'm tone deaf?

True tone deafness is rare: research puts it at about 1.5% of people. Most people who think they're tone deaf just haven't been taught to hear and match pitch yet, and that's one of the first things we work on.

How quickly will I improve?

It depends on how often you practise and what you want to sing, but you can hear real change within weeks. In one study, adults improved their pitch accuracy significantly in 10 weeks.

Do I need to read music?

No. Most people learn songs by ear, and you can make excellent progress without reading a note. The basics are easy to pick up alongside your singing if you want them.

How often should I have singing lessons?

Weekly suits most people: often enough to keep momentum, with time to practise in between. If you want to move faster, The Singing Intensive adds short online sessions and check-ins between lessons.

Do you have a free practice app?

Yes. Coleratura is the free warm-up app I built for my pupils: real piano, chords and a gentle beat, set to your voice type, with nothing to download. It's a practice tool, not a teacher, so it's best alongside lessons. See what it does.

Will singing lessons help my speaking voice?

They train the same instrument: breath, resonance, pitch control and the nerve to be heard. My lessons are singing lessons, but many students notice their speaking voice feels stronger and more confident too.

Can I have singing lessons online?

Yes. Many of my students train with me entirely online, wherever they are. All you need is a quiet space and a decent internet connection.

Where is your studio?

48 Great Marlborough Street, London W1F 7BB, in Soho, a short walk from Oxford Circus.

What's The Singing Intensive?

My 12-week programme for people who want faster progress: a personal plan, a studio hour every week, two short online Tune-Ups, check-ins five days a week and a week 12 recording. If your first session isn't right for you, I refund £700, and if you don't hear real progress by week 12, I refund everything except £250 for studio time.

Let's see what your voice can do.
